Fill Supply and Land Repair

Clean fill in, placed in layers rather than tipped

Supply and placement of clean fill, VENM, road base and other approved materials to build up, level or repair land. The material matters and so does how it goes in: fill that was tipped and spread is where a slab finds a soft spot two years later.

Before anything starts

Six things have to be settled first, and not all of them are ours

Most jobs that run late run late on this list rather than on the work itself. Each line says who owns it.

  1. 01

    What the fill is for

    Who You, with your engineer

Structural fill under a slab and landscaping fill in a garden are different materials to different specifications.

  2. 02

    Specification

    Who You, through your engineer

Material type, layer thickness and compaction standard. Without it, fill is just dirt in a hole.

  3. 03

    Volume

    Who Both of us

From levels where they exist. Ordering by eye is how a job ends with a stockpile or a shortfall.

  4. 04

    Source and documentation

    Who Max

Where the material comes from and what it is certified as. VENM and clean fill carry paperwork.

  5. 05

    Access and truck standing

    Who Both of us

Which decides the delivery vehicle and the load count.

  6. 06

    Compaction testing arrangements

    Who You, through your consultant

Who tests it and at what frequency. Deliberately not the contractor placing it.

Scope

What the quote does and does not cover

Stated side by side so there is nothing to discover later. Anything in the right hand column can be added, it is simply priced separately.

Included as standard

ItemWhat that means

CompactionTo the specified standard, where that is in scope
TrimFinished surface trimmed to the level nominated
DocumentationMaterial source and classification records

The detail

Why how it goes in matters as much as what it is

  • Fill is placed, not tipped. In layers of a specified thickness, compacted between each one. A metre of material dropped in one go cannot be compacted through.
  • The material has to suit the job. Road base under a driveway and clean fill under a lawn are different specifications and different prices.
  • VENM carries documentation. Virgin excavated natural material is certified as uncontaminated. Fill without that paperwork is fill of unknown origin, which is a problem rather than a saving.
  • Moisture matters. Material placed too wet or too dry will not reach density whatever the roller does.
  • Testing is somebody else’s job. The consultant who tests the compaction should not be the contractor who placed it.
  • Settlement is permanent. Fill that was not compacted properly settles under load, and the repair is through whatever was built on top of it.

We attend the site before quoting anything substantial.

If unsuitable material has to come out first

Removing it is remediation work and is classified before it moves. Filling over the top of unsuitable ground does not make it suitable.

What people ask about this one

What is clean fill?
Material that is free of contamination and of building and organic waste. In practice it is only clean if its source is documented: fill of unknown origin is not clean fill, it is fill nobody has tested.
What is VENM?
Virgin excavated natural material. Soil and rock excavated from ground that has not been contaminated, certified as such, which is what lets it be reused as fill without the classification process.
How deep can you fill in one layer?
To the layer thickness the specification allows, which is usually far less than people expect. Compaction only works through a limited depth, whatever equipment is used.
Do you test the compaction?
No, and you should not want us to. A geotechnical consultant tests it, independently of the contractor who placed it.
Can I use the material from my own excavation?
Sometimes, if it is suitable and uncontaminated. Topsoil and organic material are not structural fill whatever they look like. Your engineer decides.

Tell us the level and the specification

What the fill is for, the specification and the levels. Those three turn a volume into a price and stop the wrong material arriving.

  • Material supplied with its source and classification documented
  • Placed in layers to the specified thickness and compacted
  • Tested independently by your consultant, not by us
