Emergency Asbestos Clean-Up
Material broken up by an event, not by planned work
Clean up of asbestos exposed or broken up by storm, fire or accidental damage. The material is the same; what is different is that nobody chose for it to be disturbed, the area is usually not secure, and the first priority is stopping it spreading further.
Removal by licensed asbestos removalists. Max holds demolition licence AD214737
Before anything starts
Six things have to be settled first, and not all of them are ours
Most jobs that run late run late on this list rather than on the work itself. Each line says who owns it.
- 01
Stop and secure the area
Who You, immediately
Keep people out. Do not sweep, hose, vacuum or handle the material. Each of those spreads it.
- 02
Assess what has been disturbed
Who Max, with the licensed removalist
How far it has gone and whether it reached soil, which changes the scope considerably.
- 03
Engage the licensed removalist
Who Max
Damaged bonded material may have to be treated as friable, which changes the licence class.
- 04
Notify where required
Who Max and you
Notification requirements depend on the material and the circumstances. Your insurer will usually want to be told early too.
- 05
Independent assessor engaged
Who Max
Air monitoring and clearance, by somebody independent of the removalist.
- 06
Record what happened
Who You
Photographs before anything is touched, and the dates. Insurers and assessors both ask.

What the quote does and does not cover
Stated side by side so there is nothing to discover later. Anything in the right hand column can be added, it is simply priced separately.

The detail
What to do, and what not to do
- Do not sweep it. Sweeping broken fibro is the single most effective way to put fibres into the air and spread them across a wider area.
- Do not hose it. Washing material into drains and soil turns a contained problem into a contaminated ground problem.
- Do not vacuum it. An ordinary vacuum passes fibres straight through and distributes them.
- Do not handle or bag it yourself. Even with the best intentions, unwrapped material in a household bin is both unlawful and a risk to whoever handles it next.
- Do keep people and pets away. Barriers and distance, until somebody licensed has assessed it.
- Do photograph it first. Before anything is touched. Your insurer and the assessor will both want to see the original state.
What we need to quote it
- The address
- So we can look at access and what is around it
- Photographs
- One from the street and one of the work itself
- Any reports you hold
- Hazardous materials, structural, survey or levels
- Your dates
- What has to be finished by when, and what is waiting on it
We attend the site before quoting anything substantial.
If it reached the soil, the scope changes
Material broken up on the ground becomes a soil contamination question, which is classified and priced differently from a surface clean up.
