Haulage & Waste
Material off the site, and the right material back onto it
Three services: spoil removal and cartage with truck and dog and tippers, delivery of fill, road base and construction materials, and demolition waste removal with the recoverable material sorted out rather than tipped whole.
- Fleet types
- Truck and dog, bogie tippers, 10 wheelers, plant trailers
- Both directions
- Spoil out, fill and road base in
- On one contract
- With the demolition or the dig rather than separately
What we cover
3 services under Haulage & Waste
Each one has its own page. If you are not sure which applies, call and describe what you are looking at.
Scoping
Why cartage costs what it costs
Cartage is priced by the load, and what decides the number of loads is rarely the volume:
- What truck can legally stand there. A truck and dog carries far more per load and is cheaper per cubic metre, and it is useless on a street where it cannot turn or stand.
- How far the facility is. The destination is set by what the material is classified as, not by what is closest.
- What the material is. Clean fill, VENM, mixed waste, contaminated soil and asbestos contaminated material all go to different places at different rates.
- Whether it was sorted. Mixed loads are charged at the mixed rate. Separating concrete and steel on site costs machine time and usually saves more than it costs.
- Whether the truck waits. A truck standing while a machine digs is paid for. Sequencing the trucks against the dig is what keeps that off the invoice.
- Whether the return trip is loaded. If fill or road base is coming back in, the same movement does two jobs.
On a confined block the cartage is often the larger half of the bill, which is why it gets scoped with the dig rather than after it.
What we need to price it properly
- The address
- So we can look at access and what is around it
- What is there now
- A photograph from the street and one from the rear
- Any reports you hold
- Hazardous materials, geotechnical, survey or levels
- Your dates
- What has to be finished by when, and what is waiting on it
We attend the site before quoting anything substantial. A number sent without a visit is a range with a contingency inside it, and you pay for that either way.
How it runs
How the cartage is sequenced
The point of having it on the same contract is that this is planned rather than reacted to.
Access assessment
What can physically get to the kerb, where it can stand, and whether a permit is needed for it to stand there.
Material classification
What is coming out decides where it can go. Suspect fill is classified before it moves, not after it is on a truck.
Sequencing against the dig
Trucks lined up with the machine so the spoil leaves as it is generated rather than sitting on a block that has no room for it.
Load out and tracking
Loaded, covered and taken to the licensed facility for that classification, with the dockets kept.
Return loads
Where fill, VENM or road base is coming back in, it comes back on the same movement.
Detail
The trucks, and what each one is for
Operator supplied equipment list. Matching the truck to the street is part of scoping the job.
| Vehicle | What it is for | When it is the wrong choice |
|---|---|---|
| Truck and dog | High volume spoil removal and material delivery | A street where it cannot turn or legally stand |
| Bogie tipper | Tighter sites and smaller loads | High volume work, where it means more loads |
| 10 wheeler tipper | Demolition waste, and sites a truck and dog cannot access | Where a truck and dog would fit and carry more |
| Plant trailer | Moving machines between sites | Not a cartage vehicle |
Who we work for

Tell us what is moving, and where from
The street, the material and the approximate volume is enough to tell you whether a truck and dog works or whether it goes out in tippers, which is the difference that matters.
- Truck and dog, bogie and 10 wheeler tippers sized to the street
- Material classified before it moves, not after
- Fill and road base supplied on the return trip
